SFWA just started accepting self-published and small-press-published into its ranks. It’s been a long path getting here, and there are still some who aren’t happy about the change. (The bylaw change was accepted by a 6-to-1 margin; that’s about 14% of those who voted being against it.)
I’m already a member. The vote doesn’t affect my status. So why am I writing this as my gratitude post?
Because I know that we all have a lot to learn from each other, because professionalism doesn’t require any particular career path, and because I know some wonderful writers who can finally join.
So today, I am grateful to everyone who worked hard to make this come to pass (including the SFWA members who voted for the change). I’m looking forward to seeing where we can all go together.
