Half a year, half a year, half a year onward

I didn’t post goals back in January. This doesn’t mean I didn’t have ideas of what I wanted to accomplish — mostly writing, reading, and getting more consistent work. The details don’t matter much.

So how’ve I done?

  • I have been writing semi-consistently, not as many words as I would like to have done, but enough that I’m finishing and submitting new stories.
  • My reading — well, I’ve been reading to vote on the Hugos, reading as part of the Norton Award jury, reading to review galleys from NetGalley and Edelweiss, and reading random things that strike me as interesting. Lots of reading, and sometimes more from one category or another, but I’m doing well on this goal. (I’ve a backlog I need to post to GoodReads.)

Oh, and that reminds me — if you like historical fantasy, pick up J. Kathleen Cheney’s The Golden City (released last year) and its sequel The Seat of Magic (released yesterday)!

  • The work? Actually, despite my comments the other day, it’s been pretty good. The copyediting is an ongoing gig, where they usually want at least three articles a week. The last couple of weeks were light, but there’s a lot to be said for steady money.

The year feels like it’s breezing past. Overall, I’m satisfied with where I am. . . . I do want more words written during the second half of the year, though.

Today’s post was inspired by the topic “Mid-Year Check-In” — July’s topic in the Merry-Go-Round Blog Tour — an ongoing tour where you, the reader, travel around the world from author’s blog to author’s blog. We have all sorts of writers at all stages in their writing career, so there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Be sure to check out the next posts in the series, by Sandra Barret and D. M. Bonanno.

If you want to get to know nearly twenty other writers and find out their thoughts on first stories, check out the Merry-Go-Round Blog Tour. You can find links to all of the posts on the tour by checking out the group site. Read and enjoy!
