Baked French toast starts the week off right

I forgot to take a picture of the French toast, of course, and my kids prefer the usual form of French toast more, but I liked this. It used up the second loaf of bread I baked last week (my family loves fresh-baked bread but ignores the loaves of day-old bread), required much less standing around, and had a wonderful caramel topping. For reference, this is the recipe I used.

As usual, the day was split between getting ready for the week (groceries, laundry), and hanging out with my family (watched a movie with our daughter, who has fallen in love with the Buddies movies on Netflix; spent some time cleaning her room; finished reading a book). All in all, a good day, even with the low word count.

The book was The Rest of Us Just Live Here by Patrick Ness, one of the books I was recommended at Boskone. It was described as being about the kids who aren’t Buffy and her friends, which is fairly accurate despite Ness having created a different small town with recurring supernatural problems. I loved the way Ness told us what was going on in the supernatural plotline at the beginning of each chapter, but that wasn’t the focus of the book. The book is narrated by Mikey, who has trouble with OCD, and it revolves around the end of senior year for him, his sister Mel, and his best friends Jared and Henna, all of whom have their is things going on. Highly recommend it if you like Buffy, YA, and clever writing.

  1. Homemade bread is the best. Even on day 2, just pop it in the toaster or microwave and slather on the butter and honey and it’s close enough to day 1 to not ignore. Tsk. (Although the French Toast Bake sounds good, too.)

    • I’m a fan of toasted bread, too, but I’m not eating the entire loaf myself! 😉

And to be fair, the loaf had been sitting there (in a zippered bag) for a few days before I used it.
