Welcome to the Website of science-fiction and fantasy author Erin M. Hartshorn. My writing ranges across the speculative map, from hard science fiction to sword-and-sorcery to urban fantasy, in every length from flash to novels to series. As I’ve discovered, breadth, not depth, is what works for me.
This isn’t the Renaissance, and you can’t know everything (unless you’re John Hodgeman or Ken Jennings), but you can know something about many different topics. My hero in my teens was Isaac Asimov — I loved the tales of the Black Widowers, the Foundation series, Caves of Steel, and the few books of his essays I ran across. It wasn’t until later in life that I discovered he was a prolific nonfiction author as well. But you don’t have to be an Asimov to have more than one interest; even specialists have hobbies. I know professors who are also musicians, who homebrew, who do woodworking. I have a few hobbies myself, and what I don’t know, I can research. Lifelong learning — and my readers benefit.
Take a look around. Check out my writing. Judge for yourself. And come back often.
